Jalpaiguri is an area of West Bengal with historical and natural beauty. It is in the North Bengal area and is the second biggest city in North Bengal. Here are the five best places to visit in Jalpaiguri.

History Of Jalpaiguri

Jalpaiguri is a city located in the northern part of West Bengal, India. Since ancient times, the city has had a long and fascinating past. 

The region was once inhabited by indigenous tribes such as the Koch, Mech, Rangbaaz, and Bhutia communities. Because of the Pala empire, Hinduism started to spread to Jalpaiguri in the 7th century AD. 

Later, during the 12th century AD, Jalpaiguri came under Muslim rule when Bakhtiyar Khilji conquered it. Finally, in 1513 AD, Mughal Emperor Babur captured Jalpaiguri and included it in his empire.

Jalpaiguri was a tea and wood trade hub under the British colonial administration from the mid-18th century.

Places To Visit In Jalpaiguri

1. Gorumara National Park

The Dooars area of Jalpaiguri is home to this medium-sized National Park. It is on the slopes of the Himalayas in the Terai area. 

Gorumara National Park is full of plants and animals. It is on the banks of the rivers Murti and Jaldhaka. 

It’s 15 km from Lataguri, 10 km from Chalsa, and 52 km from Jalpaiguri town. The park has 193 bird species, 7 turtles, 22 snakes, 27 fish, and various small and big creatures. 

The primary attractions are elephants, one-horned rhinos, leopards, hornbills, other creatures, and magnificent landscapes. The National Park is closed during the rainy season, June 16–September 15.

2. Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary

Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary is on the Torsa River in the Eastern Himalayas. Wet, river and dry-mixed woods cover a vast Terai agricultural land. 

It has more one-horned rhinos than any other place in West Bengal. It is also an excellent place for the Royal Bengal Tiger and other animals, such as leopards, hog deer, barking deer, sambar, chital, etc. 

During the winter, it is a home for many migrating birds. In addition, there are jeep and horse trips here. 

Its main entrance is Madarihat, 22 km from Falakata Railway Station. The reserve is closed during the rainy season, from June 16 to September 15.

3. Jalpaiguri Rajbari – Places To Visit In Jalpaiguri

Jalpaiguri Rajbari is the most popular place to visit for people who come to Jalpaiguri. Rajbari, which means “palace.” 

It used to be the home of the Raikats, who were in charge of the Baikunthapur lands. 

It is a beautiful building with a long history. The Rajbari comprises the palace house, the porch, two temples, the giant palace yard, and the “Rajbari Dighi,” the palace pond. 

Daily, from 9 am to 4 pm, Rajbari is open for business.

4. Murti

Murti is next to the river Murti. It is 8 km from Chalsa and 60 km from Jalpaiguri. 

This place is known for how beautiful it looks. It is between Gorumara and Chapramari. 

In the deep forests, elephants, deer, cats, and other creatures drink from the river. However, the forest’s river Murti is its natural beauty.

5. Jalpesh

The temple of the local god, Lord Shiva, is in Jalpesh. So “Jalpesh” is where the name “Jalpaiguri” comes from. 

It is about 25 kilometers from the town of Jalpaiguri and 8 kilometers from the city of Mainguri. The building has been there for many years. 

King Jalpesh erected the temple in 800 AD. Later, numerous rulers destroyed the temple and looked to repair it. 

Lastly, in 1665, King Pranannarayan of the Koch family dug up the site of the temple and rebuilt it. But an earthquake in 1897 almost destroyed the unfortunate temple. 

But later, when money was raised, the building was rebuilt. Finally, a big show is held here in January, and people come all over to see it.

Best Time To Visit Jalpaiguri

The ideal time to visit Jalpaiguri is during the winter months between October and February. The temperature during this period ranges from 10 to 20 degrees Celsius. 

So it is perfect for sightseeing and outdoor activities like trekking and wildlife safaris. Moreover, the temperature is comfortable all day. 

Tourists may easily explore the city without concern about heat stroke or thirst.
